Crystal Palace Man and Van Health and Safety Policy
Crystal Palace Man and Van is committed to providing removal and transport services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with household and commercial moves, man and van services, loading and unloading activities, and driving operations.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
We aim to maintain high safety standards across all removal and delivery work. To achieve this, the company will:
Identify and assess risks associated with lifting, carrying, packing, driving and access to properties. Provide suitable information, instruction, training and supervision so our teams can work safely. Supply and maintain appropriate equipment, vehicles and protective measures. Encourage a proactive safety culture where everyone takes responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. Review this policy regularly and improve our practices whenever necessary.
Roles and Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who ensure that adequate resources are provided and that safe systems of work are in place. Supervisors and team leaders must implement this policy on a day to day basis, monitor working practices and address any unsafe behaviour or conditions.
All employees and contractors have a duty to care for their own health and safety and that of colleagues, customers and others affected by their actions. Everyone working with Crystal Palace Man and Van must follow safety instructions, use equipment properly and report hazards, near misses or incidents without delay.
Risk Assessments and Safe Working Practices
We carry out risk assessments for our typical removal activities, including packing, lifting, carrying, loading, unloading and driving. These assessments consider factors such as stairways, narrow access, heavy or awkward items, weather conditions and traffic risks. Findings are used to set clear methods for safe working.
Before work begins at any property, staff are encouraged to identify site specific hazards, such as loose flooring, low ceilings, poor lighting or difficult parking arrangements. Where necessary, the work will be adjusted, additional controls introduced or the task stopped if it cannot be carried out safely.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a core part of removal work and a key focus of our health and safety policy. To minimise the risk of injury, we:
Provide guidance on good lifting techniques and safe team handling. Plan the handling of heavy, fragile or bulky items before moving them. Use trolleys, dollies, straps and other aids wherever possible. Avoid unnecessary carrying by positioning vehicles as close as practical to collection and delivery points. Encourage staff to ask for help when an item is too heavy or awkward for one person.
We do not expect staff to lift items beyond safe limits or to risk their health to complete a job. Customers may sometimes be advised that additional staff or specialist equipment is required for particular items.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are essential to safe removal services. Crystal Palace Man and Van checks that vehicles are suitable for the loads they carry and that they are maintained in a roadworthy condition. Drivers are responsible for carrying out basic pre use checks and reporting any defects immediately.
Loads must be distributed safely and secured so they do not shift during transit. Staff are trained to load vehicles in a way that protects both people and property. All drivers must obey road traffic laws, adjust their driving to weather and traffic conditions and allow enough time to complete journeys without rushing.
Protecting Customers and the Public
During collections and deliveries, we take reasonable steps to protect customers and members of the public from harm. This includes planning the safe movement of goods through shared areas, avoiding blocking escape routes, and using safe lifting routes that minimise trip and impact hazards.
We handle customer belongings with care to reduce the risk of damage or injury from falling items. Where access is particularly tight or hazardous, we may discuss alternative approaches with the customer, such as removing doors, using additional staff or reorganising the route.
Work Environment and Welfare
We recognise that removal work can be physically demanding. We aim to manage workload, breaks and shift patterns in a way that reduces fatigue and supports staff wellbeing. Drinking water and rest breaks are provided in line with the nature and duration of the job.
Staff are encouraged to raise any health concerns or fitness for specific tasks, particularly where pre existing injuries or conditions could be worsened by heavy lifting or repetitive movements.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new starters receive an induction that covers our health and safety expectations and key risks associated with removal work. Where necessary, additional training is provided on manual handling, the use of lifting aids, vehicle loading and safe driving.
Supervisors and experienced team members provide on the job guidance and ensure that safe practices are followed. Refresher training and updates are offered when new equipment, procedures or risks are identified.
Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement
Crystal Palace Man and Van encourages prompt reporting of accidents, near misses, property damage and unsafe conditions. All reports are reviewed to identify root causes and to implement corrective actions where necessary.
We regularly review our health and safety performance and this policy, taking into account any changes in our services, work methods or legal requirements. Feedback from staff and customers is valued and used to improve our safety standards.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed periodically to ensure it remains relevant and effective for our removal and man and van operations. Updated versions will be communicated to all staff and made available to customers upon request.
